Can you delete your DigiLocker account?
Short answer
Yes. DigiLocker’s own Terms of Use list deleting your account as a user right and say you can remove your account and related data at any time. They do not publish the steps, so if your app shows no delete option, ask the official helpdesk at support.digilocker.gov.in or email helpdesk@negd.in, giving the mobile number registered on the account.
What deletion can’t touch: your Aadhaar, driving licence and marksheets live with the departments that issued them — DigiLocker holds a link to each. Apps you let fetch documents can still hold copies of what they already took, and authentication logs are kept as the law provides. Download anything you uploaded yourself first. And if you are deleting because of a “This Aadhaar is already registered” error, DigiLocker’s FAQ says to recover your first account instead.

Who to ask
- DigiLocker helpdesk
https://support.digilocker.gov.in
Submit and track a request online. Ask for the account and its data to be deleted, quote the Terms of Use, and ask for written confirmation. - Email
helpdesk@negd.in
The address DigiLocker’s helpdesk page gives for queries. support@digitallocker.gov.in is the support address DigiLocker declares on Google Play. - Also: cut off apps you no longer use
DigiLocker’s My Consent dashboard lists the apps that can fetch your documents. Revoking stops new fetches; it does not recall copies already taken. How consent works in DigiLocker →
What deleting DigiLocker can’t touch
- Issued documents. DigiLocker’s FAQ says issued documents come directly from the original data source, and DigiLocker shows a link (URI) to each. The record stays with UIDAI, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, CBSE or whoever issued it.
- Copies apps already fetched. The National e-Governance Division, which runs DigiLocker, says revoking an app’s consent stops it fetching anything new. What it already took sits in that company’s own systems — ask it directly.
- Authentication logs. DigiLocker’s Terms of Use say these “are retained as provided under law”.
- Your own uploads are yours to keep: download them before you ask.
The common trap: people try to delete DigiLocker after a “This Aadhaar is already registered” error. DigiLocker’s FAQ says that means your Aadhaar is already linked to an earlier account, and suggests recovering it with Forgot Username/Password using Aadhaar.
Deleting the account is not the same as deleting the data
DigiLocker’s own privacy policy, which we read on 2026-08-14, says it may still do the following. Closing your account does not by itself withdraw your consent to these:
- share your data with partners
Why a DPDP notice is the wrong tool here
DigiLocker’s privacy policy names the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) as the party handling your data, and the platform is run by MeitY’s National e-Governance Division. Section 17(4) of the DPDP Act 2023 says the Section 12(3) erasure right does not apply to processing by the State or its instrumentalities, and the Act’s rights commence in stages up to May 2027 anyway.
Your firmer footing is DigiLocker’s own Terms of Use, which list deleting your account as a user right. Quote that in your request, and keep the reference number.
Do this for every app at once

Can I delete my DigiLocker account?
Yes. DigiLocker's Terms of Use say users can delete their account and related data at any time, but DigiLocker publishes no step-by-step route. Ask its helpdesk at support.digilocker.gov.in or by email to helpdesk@negd.in, giving the mobile number registered on the account.
What happens to my Aadhaar and other documents if I delete DigiLocker?
Issued documents such as Aadhaar, a driving licence or a marksheet come from the department that issued them, and DigiLocker holds a link to each, so the record stays with the issuer. Documents you uploaded yourself are yours: download them before you ask for deletion.
Why does DigiLocker say 'This Aadhaar is already registered'?
DigiLocker's FAQ says this happens when your Aadhaar is already linked to another DigiLocker account. It suggests recovering that first account with Forgot Username/Password using your Aadhaar, rather than opening a new one.
Can I use the DPDP Act to make DigiLocker delete my data?
Not as a right. DigiLocker is run by the National e-Governance Division of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, and Section 17(4) of the DPDP Act 2023 says the Section 12(3) erasure right does not apply to processing by the State or its instrumentalities. DigiLocker's own Terms of Use, which list deleting your account as a user right, are the firmer footing.
